See our selection of Wessex Standards | See our selection of Wessex ClassicsI invite you to explore our site where clay tobacco pipes have been a core feature of our business since 1998. We offer several period clay pipes including the 16” tavern pipe, which the stories tell, was available for tavern patrons who would enjoy a bowl of tobacco as they drank their ale. The smoker would break off the tip so the next smoker could relax with a clean pipe. But all that was before the germ theory of disease, the spread of herpes and the modern preference for at least a minimal level of sanitation. We now have solid wood holders for our 16" long colonial tavern pipes. These American made gems are an exceptionally attractive way to store and display your clay tavern pipes. On the reenactment battlefields of Brandywine, Germantown, Concord, Yorktown, Montreal, Greensboro, Lexington, Newtown, or any of the dozens of other sites throughout the U.S. and Canada (and even Devon, England) a smaller clay pipe may prove to be a more durable choice. We carry a variety for your pleasure including a 6" Colonial style, an 8” English tavern style, and a Dutch Gouda style (a good choice for the German regiments?). The Civil War has been the focus of interest and reenactments since the years following the American Revolution. It has been suggested that the annual reenactments paved the way for Lincoln’s election to the Presidency and the subsequent War Between the States. But you didn't log in here to learn about history, you probably just want to find out what kind of pipe the warriors smoked between battles. Our combined ages here at Pipeshoppe.com would put us close to, but not close enough to the Civil War to say from first hand experience what was smoked and how. But wait – there is GOOD NEWS! We have a Pamplin - style clay bowl that is similar to the style used in the 19th century. These bowls are actually pretty old - early 20th century and are no longer in production, so snarf them up quickly! Other clay pipe styles date back to Shakespeare’s era. With the diminutive Elizabethan clay pipe you are almost compelled to cut back on your tobacco consumption. Just four inches long with a bowl about half the size of a thimble, this little pipe is a replica of the pipes used in England during the time when tobacco was a rare luxury and those who had some could only indulge in it a pinch at a time. Not necessarily the first choice for those who favor a long session with the pipe, the small Elizabethan is none-the-less a fun little item for your collection. I think you will enjoy the clean smoking qualities of the natural clay pipe.
